Mission
The Massasoit Community College Participatory Action Research Team (MPAR Team) is a group of SUCCESS Scholar students who seek to document students’ educational experiences and curate student success recommendations by placing students at the center of the research process. Additionally, and in collaboration with students, projects culminate in research-informed action steps that embrace the belief that “research must be useful” and “should help amplify those voices that have been left out of the educational decision-making process” (PAR Collective, 2022, Student Research Conversation (SRC)). Massasoit students work as co-researchers, side-by-side with the Principal Investigator (PI), Dr. Tara Gully-Hightower, to form a research collective (Fox & Fine, 2016). PAR focuses on documenting students’ experiences and finding ways to support students who have been historically marginalized in community college (Carnevale and Stohl, 2013; USDE NCES, 2019; Goldrick-Rab, 2016). Student researchers participate in and design all phases of the study, and as the research evolves, they have more and more control over the study.

What is PAR
Participatory action research, or PAR, is a research stance that recognizes that people’s lived experiences contain valuable knowledge about what it is like to be a community college student. Epistemologically, PAR is often rooted in critical theories of transformative praxis to empower those who have been silenced by institutionalized, colonial, and positivistic educational policies (Freire, 1970). Data collection often entails a mix of standard and evolving methods. Student co-researchers conduct a review of critical theory in the context of PAR. Co-researchers train in research ethics, write IRB proposals, design surveys, interviews, and focus groups. Co-researchers write memos, lead critical transcript analysis, develop layers of emic codes, aggregate data, identify key findings, make research-based recommendations, and engage in action.

The Student Senate is the Student Government Association at Massasoit Community College. They serve as a liaison between the student body and the college administration, participating in planning and decision-making processes to improve the college experience for all students. They also oversee student clubs and organizations, including the annual review of club applications and the allocation of funds to support the missions of established clubs and organizations. Senators are also very involved members of the college community, planning and attending student activities and events, and participating in community service projects.

The Office of Health and Wellness at Massasoit supports students’ holistic health and wellbeing utilizing Dr. Peggy Swarbrick’s Eight Pillars of Wellness Model. These 8 pillars include emotional, environmental, financial, intellectual, occupational, physical, social, and spiritual wellness. We then address the facets of wellness by providing health information, outreach campaigns, and programs focused on high-risk areas that impact college populations.

TRIO Student Support Services (TRIO SSS) is a federally funded program at Massasoit Community College (MCC) which is focused on increasing the retention, graduation, and transfer rates from two-year to four-year institutions of students who are first-generation, low income and/or have a documented disability. The program provides comprehensive services and opportunities designed to promote student success and holistic well-being, paying special attention to challenges that are often experienced by first-generation students.

Students who participate in the TRIO SSS Program have their own advisor who works closely with the student to advise, both academically and personally, and to help navigate the sometimes-confusing administrative requirements of being a college student. TRIO SSS is a place where our students can come to talk, vent, and share their successes; obtain support; and connect with their community of TRIO peers.
